A Chance To Relive The Past

When we hear the word museum the first thing that comes to mind is history and as a country, we do have quite an interesting and rich one filled with beautiful but also hard times. What better way to learn and relive those moments than by visiting the museum our country has to offer. Starting from the Ethnological Museum in Prishtina where we see a display of the old and traditional lifestyle, moving to the city of Prekaz where thanks to the museum we get to see the belongings of the Jashari family, a name that will always be remembered for bravery. I had heard about the Ethnological Museum when I was younger but I had never been there, and neither had my friends, so now was the right time to do so. As soon as we walked up to the front door we see the typical white house with black wooden windows. Old but well kept.

Because of the tall green trees surrounding the house, the sun was being blocked which helped a lot, especially on a hot summer day. As we walked up to the door, a man approached us telling us more details about the museum. It turned out that this museum was once a house owned by a wealthy family during the 18th century, which meant that it was around 300 years old. He started by showing us the kitchen where women used to cook,

And upstairs where there was a bedroom and oda As I was walking up the stairs I was comparing the houses we live in now with this one. The main point in which I was curious to know was why every door was small in size compared to the doors we have now. When I asked the man he did not give me a clear answer but one thing he mentioned was that during that time it was a tradition to enter a house while bowing down symbolizing respect. It was a great opportunity to see where our ancestors used to live 300 years ago.

From the traditional lifestyle families had in the past we move to Prekazi, a beautiful city but with a thrilling history. Prekazi was the birthtown of Adem Jashari, known as a hero of our country. Together with nearly 60 of his family members fought against the occupant at the time, unfortunately not making it out alive. Because this family holds a great importance, today we can easily visit the museum of this family and also the house where they lived and fought from.

Knowing their story and seeing their belongings from up close, a rush of emotions came over me. I felt devastated by the fact that humans are capable of taking the lives of innocent people, people who tried to save their land. A part of me was crying on the inside because of pain but most of those tears were happy, proud tears because this family has shown us what sacrifice and bravery really is and what it takes to protect our country.

A moment that really broke my heart was seeing the children’s toys. It is sad to think that those children did not get the chance to enjoy their childhood and play with those toys. Instead of being behind those glass frames, they should have been used by the children to play with. These moments make you think of all the other innocent children that were killed during the war and how many toys have been left without anyone to play with them.

Because of all people who gave up their lives for our freedom, we get to live freely and see all this history and the beautiful culture that we have. Let’s not forget our roots because they make us who we are.
