A place that speaks more than words

A place that speaks more than the words.

When traveling to a new country, what is a better place to visit than a museum, so that you get the idea of that particular place’s history and culture, however, that is not always the case, for instance even though I somehow know my own country’s history, it definitely helped the visit that I made to The Ethnographic Museum, located in Prishtina, which was a house that it felt amazing to see.

Talking from my experience, in general, when visiting this museum somehow I got quite a feeling that it is not that easy to explain, meaning in a good way. When actually seeing and also being able to touch some of them, it felt like I was going back to the past, without being aware of it. It amazed me how even after so many years, those items were able to stand the time and be in good condition. Only by looking at them I could imagine the way those people lived, and everything there in a way spoke and told its story. It felt surreal, at least I think this is any museum’s aim, however, to me it was so much more than that.

This was the dining table in what the docent said was the oldest house in Prishtina. Being able to see this I really had no comment. I just kept staring at it. Also, the chairs were of different forms, because of the kind of the position you have in the house, that chair belongs to you, I was amazed by it. And, in the background the kitchen items that resisted the time somehow completed the picture of a perfect kitchen.

Moving forward this room was the one where usually men used to chat with each other and some of the most important discussions would take place. All what was in this particular room made me realize also how traditions were back in that time, men staying apart from women even though they knew each other and were family. But also on the other hand I imagined myself just being there and listening to what they would talk about, which made me really curious. As the docent was talking I could not help myself but just being extremely happy of being able to hear those stories, and also kind of mad because of why I did not visit here earlier.

Now, this is the opposite of the previous room. In this room stayed women, that also explains the cradle being there, as women were supposed to take care of their child. I was in awe when I saw the little cradle, by just imagining how a baby was once in it. The interior, the carpet, the sofa, altogether, gave me a feeling of how old and how a treasure this was.

This experience was undoubtedly something that I will never forget. The vibe, the atmosphere that this house held made me wish to have visitors it earlier. As soon as I saw it and thought about it afterwards, it made me proud. Proud of the way of how early Albanian traditions were and how this house resisted the time.
