A visit to the past - Emira Baliu

 A visit to the past

Having been able to visit two of the museums of Pristina: The National Museum and The Ethnological Museum of Kosovo, I got to discover so much about our culture and traditions, it was a great experience.

The first museum I visited was the National Museum of Kosovo Kosovo. I had gone to a museum before, but I did not expect that I would be this amazed, as if this was my first time visiting a museum. But then, that is the beauty of museums, the different kinds of artifacts, all of the equal importance evoking all kinds of emotions, the best source of inspiration.

I had a great time as I got to see some of the artifacts that withstood the ravages of time and had great stories behind them. I also got to learn that some of the artifacts were stolen, but some of them were returned with the “Goddess on the Throne” being one of them.

Visiting this museum, I was exposed to new things I had not
witnessed before. Like, there were these cups known
as “Lacrima-tears " that people filled with their tears when
they missed their loved ones, the bigger the cup, that meant
the greater your love for that person was.

I also liked this statuette “The Prizren runner”, which was found in Prizren where they usually displayed these statuettes during the games back then.
Honestly, I enjoyed the short visit at this museum, this experience incites me to visit more museums and learn more about not just my country’s culture, but other countries’ cultures, too. It makes me want to know more, educate myself more about humanity’s past and explore the unveiled hidden stories.

Then, I went to the Ethnological Museum of Kosovo. Here I got to learn that this museum beforehand was actually a house a rich family used to live in three hundred years ago.

The moment I stepped inside, there was a room that had a table and
chairs in the middle, some metal dishes on the shelves, it was quite
interesting, it showed a lot about their lifestyle.

Then, I went to the other rooms which all were connected to each-other, one room lead to another. I went in this room known as the “Oda e Burrave” a room in which only men gathered, women were not allowed.

In it there was this traditional cloth from the region of Hasi which was as old as the house itself. That reminded me of the cloth my grandma passed on to me which is also like a hundred years old, and I started picturing myself wearing it. I was happy in that moment.

Then I continued visiting the other rooms, there were some paintings in them and also a djep (a bed in which babies sleep).
This visit was a memorable experience; it gave me the chance to travel back in time and know more about my culture.
Initially, I thought visiting these two museums was going to be a boring idea. The last time I was at a museum was when I was a kid, and I did not know the importance of what was being shown in front of me. But the adult me visiting these museums got to learn a lot about herself, her roots, and her culture.
