“Art
takes different forms, but it represents something that is basic to us – our
history”. – George Clooney. A small country like Kosovo is
not that rich of museums because of the small population and disinterest of
people yet those that it possesses are filled with the history of our nation. One
of the most frequented and visited is the “National Museum”, located in
Prishtinë.
Firstly, having the chance to visit the “National Museum”, in which there can be seen different artifacts such as: jewelries that women used to wear in the past, the monetary in the Dardanian Kingdom, last but not least the sculpture of “Hyjnesha në Front”. Seeing all those objects that tell the history of my country gave me weird but good and happy feelings because of how in a way history is calling me and wants to talk to me throughout those monuments. It felt like the museum have been waiting for me to finally tell me its stories.
Also, I got the chance to see the document where the Declaration of the Independence of Kosovo is written. It was all covered in glass form all the sides and looked
so special when you looked from the outside. While going around it, so many
mixed emotions floating within me, feeling nervous but also happy at the same
time just knowing that, that small document was all it needed to set us free
and an independent country officially, which our country had been fighting for
years. Lots
of things that I did not even know that were part of our culture. Starting with
a lot of jewelries that women used to wear back in the day, and how ancient
they were, how they survived with the years passing.
Ongoing with the monetary of the Dardanian Kingdom, the ancient coins used
by the Illirians in the past. What I was feeling in those moments cannot be
described with words but I can sum up with only one word: magnified. They were
made out of bronze but they remaind very retained even after all the years.
Comparing those coins with the coins of nowadays, there were not that much
differences yet you could easily tell that they were ancient and used in the
past since they were really old and it had been told to me by the cicerone in
the museum.

Secondly, I visited the second floor where you
could see objects from today’s history, which was even more excited because
they were artifacts that I already knew about. What I was able to see during my
visit on the second floor of the museum were the uniforms of the UÇK soldiers.
They were covered with glass all around them to be protected from any damage
that could come from the outside. Being able to see things that I only saw from
television, with my own eyes, gave me butterflies throughout my stomach. At
some time, I remember my eyes starting to fill with tears because at that
moment I remembered what my country has been through and also the thought that
that uniform may belong to one of those soldiers who fought for Kosovo, gave me
chills.
Museums are a part
of our history, they want to speak to us and tell us what they know. Those
artifacts will remain there as long as we care for them. Let’s continue and let our history always be remained
and remembered.
